In the magical world of moviemaking, nothing says promising actor better than playing a crackhead. Heck, it's not unusual for one-time crackheads to go on to make millions for future projects. Not surprisingly, most of these actors also happen to be black. This may lead readers to the uneasy feeling that Hollywood is racist, but don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. The Man isn't saying that all black people are crackheads, he's only saying that all crackheads are black. That's not so bad is it? In any event, without further ado, the ApeSheet proudly highlights the careers of a few of its favorite crackheads. |
Samuel L. Jackson Nobody does crackhead quite like Sam Jackson, and nobody directs crackhead quite like Spike Lee. Jackson played the lovable crackhead Gator in Lee's 1991 film Jungle Fever. His movie career may have begun back in the '70s. But, until Lee turned him into a crackhead, Jackson was stuck with parts such as Gang Member Number 2 in Ragtime and Black Guy in the Al Pacino/Ellen Barkin classic Sea of Love. Thanks to his work as a crackhead, Jackson went on to earn parts in blockbusters including Jurassic Park, Pulp Fictionand the Star Wars prequels. Nothing says success quite like crack. |
Halle Berry How does one become the fist black woman (OK, kinda black. Her momma's white but we'll keep that on the DL) ever to win an Oscar? By starting off as a crackhead. Berry played Vivian, Jackson's crackhead girlfriend in Jungle Fever. This bold portrayal led to roles in classics including The Program, The Flintstones and B.A.P.S. Next, she's gratuitously sunbathing topless in Swordfish and screwing Billy Bob Thorton in Monster's Ball. The Academy clearly recognizes genius. |
Chris Rock Pookie is probably the most memorable crackhead in crackhead history. With this dramatic turn in New Jack City, Rock went from the black guy that didn't get any good parts on Saturday Night Live to acclaimed actor. His future only got brighter with parts in fine fare such as Sgt. Bilko and Beverly Hills Ninja. Eventually, he landed his own show on HBO, which helped him earn more substantial parts in Lethal Weapon 4, Nurse Betty and the lead in the unforgettable Down to Earth. Now he's in a summer blockbuster withAnthony Hopkins. All thanks to crack. |
Bernie Mac Long before he was one of the Original Kings of Comedy, Mac earned his stripes with his heart-wrenching portrayal of Flip, the crackhead/bum in 1994's Above the Rim. To be fair, Flip wasn't characterized as a crackhead, but what other reason would he have for being a homeless bum. Mac went on to films including Get On the Bus, Booty Call and How to Be a Player before landing a part in Ocean's 11 and his very own sitcom on the well respected, critically acclaimed Fox network. |
Keith Morris Morris played Dave the Crackhead in Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. He hasn't had much of an acting career, but he deserves mention for several reasons. First, he's one of few white men to tackle the challenging role of crackhead. And, more importantly, he's the former singer of Black Flag and the Circle Jerks. After many years of obscurity, Morris has reunited with his Circle Jerk bandmates, and the group is currently working to put together a tour as soon as Morris recovers from his many recent healthproblems. |
Keener Ivory Wayans Nothing proves the power of the crack quite like agreeing to co-star in a movie with Steven Seagal. It's true Wayans played a cop and not a crackhead in The Glimmer Man, but here at the ApeSheet it's widely believed Wayans must have been smoking crack when he agreed to do the movie. Rather than jumpstarting his career, this film mostly relegated Wayans to the sideline, directing his brothers in the Scary Movie trilogy. Playing a crackhead is a good career move. Becoming a crackhead is not. |
Mike Epps After a brief turn as Day Day in Next Friday, Epps went on to boldly portray Crackhead in D.J. Pooh's under-appreciated 3 Strikes. This daring move led to success in such fine cinema as Bait and How High as well as voice work in Dr. Dolittle 2 and, finally, the co-starring role in the Ice Cube vehicle All About the Benjamins. Epps is currently scheduled to reprise his character Day Day in the soon-to-be-released Friday After Next. After that, who knows? One thing is certain: This fine young thespian is well on his way to cultural icon. |
Snoop Dogg Many believe playing a crackhead in Training Day came naturally for Snoop. That may be the case, but he not only played a crackhead, he played a crippled crackhead. Snoop should also be applauded for managing to make his character Blue memorable in a movie laden with crackheads. Snoop's acting expertise led him to the main role in the new classic horror film Bones. The futures of the other Training Day crackheads, Garland Whitt and Will Foster Stewart, remain to be seen. Being white, Stewart probably doesn't stand much of a chance at parlaying his crackhead status into to success. Whitt, on the other hand, is black enough to make it work. |
